MIX: Eats Everything live at In:Motion (Essential Mix)

Here's a chance to catch up on a mix that may have escaped you.

BBC Radio 1's Essential Mix recorded Eats Everything, live in his hometown of Bristol at In:Motion, towards the end of 2011. Originally broadcast in November of last year it was also re-broadcast during the first week of February. There was a reason why it was aired twice.

We saw the man himself at the Bugged Out Weekender a few months ago and were reminded why Eats Everything aka Daniel Pearce has had a meteoric rise to success during the last 12 months. This mix only confirms those thoughts as it showcases the forward thinking house music also represented by fellow Bristolians Julio Bashmore and Waifs & Strays.

'Drive' soundtrack to be released on vinyl

The Drive soundtrack was undeniably the most hyped and fawned over of last year, and to a great degree, rightly so. Now it's getting a release on vinyl to complete its ascent to the hippest of the hip.

Geoff Barrow of Portishead and Invada Records has announced that his label will be releasing the vinyl version of the soundtrack come May 21st to accompany the CD and digital releases that landed in November of last year.

Expect to hear everything you'd expect including Cliff Martinez's unsettling score and the neon tinged pop of Kavinsky & Lovefoxx, College and the Chromatics.

Jack Beats - Deeper (Dubs For Clubs Part 2)

Yesterday Jack Beats dropped part two of their "Dubs For Clubs" free download series. Following on from the colossal "Make The People", they have generously given away a track that has been on the lips of club-goers everywhere for at least 2 or 3 years; the mighty "Deeper".

The track started life as a remix for drum & bass legend TC's track "Deep" in 2009. It remained unreleased for so long that eventually the lads just decided to bin all the bits from TC's tune and turned it into an original track. Again though, it remained unreleased and could only be heard in Jack Beats' DJ sets. Until now.

Hodgy Beats - Untitled EP

The festival of Scuba continues this week in the lead up to the release of Paul Rose's third full length album. Normally it would be silly to dedicate this much attention to one artist but with Scuba you can pretty depend on it being worth it each and every time.

So, we now have Scuba's brand new Essential Mix that was broadcast last night on BBC Radio 1. It's two hours of some of the most upfront house and features exclusive new material from Hotflush, including tracks from Boddika and Guy Andrews.

Botnek are hands down my favourite producers right now, and it's great to see them getting the recognition they deserve! Their dutch-inspired, ragga-infused club bombs recently caught the eyes (and ears) of Jack Beats, who decided to put them on at their next "Jack Beats Loves..." night at Fabric on Friday 2nd March.

The lads also put together a wicked mix for Fabric, which contains sneak previews of their upcoming tune "Owls", their remix for LKid's "Funky Situation", and two ridiculously massive untitled jams.

Next Monday, the 27th February, sees the release of the album Personality from Hotflush label boss Scuba. As a teaser the Hotflush Recordings Soundcloud page now has the entirety of the album available to stream for your listening pleasure.

The album continues in the same vein as his recent releases such as the track Adrenaline. This means a lighter and more accessible sound from Scuba's third full length release.

Will "Santero" Kirby is a stalwart of the London and Nottingham scenes, and if you're a POW! regular you may well have caught him rocking the ones and twos here in Norwich on a couple of occasions. He's had quite a couple of years; at the end of 2010 he signed to Utah Saints' Sugarbeat Records, then went on to win the UK Redbull Thre3style Championship (leaving London favourites Oneman and Martelo in his wake). Through 2011 he released two EPs on Sugarbeat and Sounds of Juan, as well as several collaborations with production partner Pete Jordan as Jordan & Santero. By the end of 2011 they'd taken matters into their own hands and set up their own record label, Weird Science Recordings. Four singles down the line, the label is expanding at a rate of knots with releases for Coin Operated Boy, Citizen and Ursa Major all scheduled for the coming months.

In addition to releasing some exciting new music, Weird Science also run monthly events at Brick Lane's 93 Feet East, boasting sets from label talent alongside residents Jordan & Santero. The next event is on Saturday 18th February and the lineup includes Stripes & Citizen. March's lineup features Coin Operated Boy, and Lefty (17th March). If you find yourself in East London on either of those weekends, make sure you stop by.

A long time friend, former POW! graphic designer and resident DJ; he's always first to be suggested when we're looking for groove. His selections are heartfelt, his blending sublime and he has a DJ mince rivalled only by Right Said Fred. Now, a little bit about his offering:

Describe your mix in 3 words?
Deep, Percussive, Jackin'

How did you go about creating the mix?
I tend to play around with new tunes and try and construct a tracklist that flows. I then record, using my amazingly budget set up of two CDJ 200's and a Behringer DJX 700 mixer! I'm quite gutted, one of my Vestax PDX-a1S turntables died this week. It's made out of wood and must be over 10 years old, so I don't think it's done too badly.

Name your biggest DJ embarrassment?
Pressing the cue button on the wrong CDJ... I think we've all done it though. I'm sure there are more, but I can't remember (literally).

What track is your secret weapon?
It wouldn't be a secret if I told you! Though "Inflation" by Crazy Cousinz features in most of my sets. It's an incredible tune, and still gets a great dancefloor reaction wherever I'm playing.

Who or what has been the biggest influence on your style of DJing?
Jesse Rose.

Who are you tipping for big things in the coming months?
I have to do a shout out to my chums in Zoo Look and Casino Times. They really are making big movements in all the right directions at the moment. If you don't know, get to know!

What's the best set you've witnessed in the last 12 months?
Greymatter at Tief. Room 2 in Corsica Studios was something else.

I hear yelps of discontent. Why is there a post about Madonna? Why is this the third one concerning M.I.A. this week? NICKI MINAJ!?

Because it's Superbowl Sunday, that's why.

Everyone's favourite piece of mutton dressed as lamb, Madonna, will be performing during half time at Superbowl XLVI tonight and, fuck it, I'm excited because it will be ludicrously over the top and in your face. And there's the possibility of 'Vogue'.

To provide the requisite hype in the lead up to the performance Madonna has been collaborating with M.I.A and Nicki Minaj and has produced the track 'Give Me All Your Luvin' with the pair. They will also be performing with her at the Superbowl show.

The video for the track dropped a few days ago. So enjoy and get ready for tonight....

M.I.A - Bad Girls (Official Video)

A couple of days ago we shared M.I.A's new single "Bad Girls". If you weren't excited about that, then perhaps there's reason to get excited about her new video, directed by Romain Gavras. Ever since he directed the video for Mehdi's Signatune he's been a firm POW! favourite and with notable director credits for videos for Justice, Simian Mobile Disco, The Last Shadow Puppets and of course M.I.A's controversial Born Free it's reasonable to have high expectations of his new opus.

Gavras has clearly picked up on the distinct Arabic influences on the track and weaved that theme into a video. The results are a slightly surreal Middle-East/West End musical. With some cool stunt drivers. To be honest, it's pretty hard to describe, you should probably just watch it and formulate your own opinions. Check it!

Many of you will have already seen Part 1 of our Bugged Out Weekender recap. One of the highlights for me (and many of the people I spoke to/at whilst stumbling around Butlins at 8.30am) was The 2 Bears' DJ set. It was the first chance I'd had to see them in action and they certainly did not disappoint. Furthermore, having somehow ended up in an impromptu party in their dressing room, it's safe to say they're probably two of the nicest chaps in dance music today.

With all of this fresh in my mind, I was eager to grab their album when it dropped on Southern Fried yesterday and much like their DJ set, it did not disappoint. Musically, the album spans from solid 4/4 house stompers through shuffling two-steppers to more chilled out/contemplative numbers. Personal favourites include Work, Warm & Easy, Church and the downtempo, almost folky Time In Mind. You can stream and buy the full album after the jump!

To celebrate the release of their album, the bears have been kind enough to give away the St Etienne remix of their latest single Work. Other remixes come from the likes of Toddla T, Oliver $, Supabeatz and Franky Rizardo. Download it below!

Stream the new MIA single - 'Bad Girls'

MIA has a new single out and available to stream now. Hopefully this might start to build the hype for her forthcoming forth album after her somewhat disappointing third effort. Entitled 'Bad Girls' the song is produced by Danja and has been heard before in the form of an earlier demo that appeared on MIA's Vicki Leekx mixtape.

The song is officially available from tomorrow (31 January) and is then followed by its official video on the 3 February which is being directed by Romain Gavras of 'Born Free' and Notre Jour Viendra fame.

Bugged Out Weekender - A Recap - Pt.1

Just over a week ago saw Bugged Out! host their weekender at Butlins in Bognor Regis. Ignore your preconceptions about the place as the event was a weekend jam packed with international DJ talent that could be enjoyed in a sense of comfort unknown to those who have only attended festivals in far flung corners of the English countryside. And this was January.

Although there were many rumours of an undersold event the weekend was a perfectly balanced affair that avoided the crushes of many festivals yet still filled the venues out. However, the Sunday did feel slightly empty particularly due to the earlier start in the programming.

FRIDAY

The first night of music took no prisoners with Diplo, Simian Mobile Disco, the 2 Bears, Joy Orbison, Julio Bashmore and James Holden all performing.

Despite playing in a relatively early 10:30pm slot in one of the smallest venues, Jaks, Joy Orbison played one of the sets of the weekend, showcasing his depth of knowledge when it comes to house music. He was followed by Julio Bashmore, who kept things more downbeat than usual but still demonstrated why he's one of the hottest names in house music currently.

This care and craft from the Bristolian was further highlighted by the contrast to one of the disappointments of the weekend - Diplo. Sandwiched by Fake Blood and the 2 Bears, Diplo seemed to pay no attention to his crowd and went in heavy and hard with endless commercial remixes that resulted in an unbalanced set that left many deeply dissatisfied. The aforementioned duo who played either side of him compounded this by playing 2 great tech based sets which kept the crowd going until the early hours of the morning.

Azari & III Fact Mix

2011 saw Azari & III's star rise and rise. They've started 2012 in exactly the same way. Following their Essential Mix debut they've now released a Fact Mix. Number 313 in the infamous series sees the Toronto based foursome bring an hour of their heavy hitting house to the turntables.

This is all a precursor to their headlining UK show at Heaven on 2 February. While their DJ sets are good, their live shows are something else. Fully incorporating the two duos within the group - producers Christian ‘Dinamo Azari’ Farley and Alphonse ‘Alixander II’ Lanza, and two vocalists, Fritz Helder and Cedric Gasiada - the live show takes their productions to another realm.

Orbital to release their first album in 8 years

Orbital have announced that their new album will be released April 1. Entitled Wonky, it will be the first from the duo since 2004's Blue Monday and their eighth studio in all.

The pair released a taster of the album at the back end of last year called 'Never' but apart from this, teaser information has been sparse. Although no confirmed tracklisting has been announced there will be collaborations with Zola Jesus and UK rapper Lady Leshurr while the album has been mixed by Depeche Mode and U2 producer Flood.

Hinge Finger's First Release is Announced

In the last few weeks of 2011 Joy Orbison and Will Blankhead, of Trilogy Tapes renown, announced the launch of their new label, Hinge Finger.

They have now let slip the initial details of their first release on their new label. Speaking in the Guardian over the weekend Joy Orbison let it be known that it would be a record by New York’s Madteo and that its title would be Bugler Gold Pt. 1. The American has seen previous releases on labels such as Morphine.

Firm POW! favourite, Oneman, recently played a special set at UK scene-leader Hatcha's wedding at the end of last year. He was kind enough to record it (or most of it) and has put it up on his blog to download. We've taken the liberty of transcribing the track list and sharing the download link here too. The LCD Soundsystem documentary now has a trailer

The LCD Soundsystem documentary Shut Up and Play the Hits has had an accompanying trailer released.

The film, directed by Dylan Southern and Will Lovelace, focuses on the group's last ever gig at Madison Square Gardens last year. The directors' previous work was Blur's reunion film No Distance Left to Run.

The spiel for the release points strongly towards an attempt to not confine the documentary to a simple gig-film as it suggests '...it is both a narrative film documenting this once in a life time performance and an intimate portrait of James Murphy as he navigates the lead-up to the show, the day after, and the personal and professional ramifications of his decision.'

Shut Up and Play the Hits will premiere at the Sundance Film Festival on January 22.

Youngman - The Night Is Young (Web Series)

The Night Is Young is a brand new web series that goes behind the scenes with up and comer Youngman. Episode one focuses on the making of the video for his forthcoming single "Who Knows?", set for release on Digital Soundboy on 29th January.

Produced by Skream, it looks like the track could combine just the right amount of London edginess with the pop sensibilities of Youngman's vocal performance. It certainly seems that the track has a lot of the hall marks of a chart success and has already received a whole load of support from industry shot-callers including being named Zane Lowe's "Next Hype", MistaJam's "Jam Hot" and Annie Mac's "Record Of The Week". On top of that, Youngman's set to support Example on his UK-wide arena tour later this year.

2012 looks like it could be bright for this Youngman.

Reset! - Don't Let The System Control You

Italian DJ/Producer/Promoter conglomerate Reset! are high up on my list of names to watch in 2012. Reset!'s unique brand of wonky, groovy, club music has become something of a staple in my sets and their latest release does not disappoint. "Don't Let The System Control You" came out on Hervé's prolific Cheap Thrills label on the 9th January and I've been playing it, along with its B-Side "Oh Yeah!", in my POW! sets for about a month to a great response.

Coachella 2012 Lineup Announced

Yesterday saw the announcement of the lineup for Coachella 2012 and it is BIG one. As ever, the Indio, California festival has pulled out all the stops. Headlined by the Black Keys, Radiohead and Dr Dre & Snoop Dog the festival will also feature reunion appearances from At The Drive In and The Refused. And of course there is an eclectic array of new and old talent such as Pulp, Frank Ocean, The Weeknd, SBTRKT, Bon Iver, Justice and M83 to name but a few.

This year's event, for the first time, will be held over two consecutive weekends, April 13th-15th and 20th-22nd.

Tickets go on sale this Friday (January 13th) and start at $285 for a festival pass.

The 2012 Red Bull Music Academy is going to be in New York

It has been announced that the 2012 Red Bull Music Academy is going to be held in New York City. Red Bull will be accepting applications for the event from February 2nd with the closing date for submissions being April 2nd.

'Swims' by Boddika & Joy Orbison finally gets a release date

One of the biggest tracks of 2011 is finally getting an official physical release. 'Swims' by Boddika & Joy Orbison is to be released solely on vinyl via Swamp 81 records, with shipping to commence on the 13th January.

The original acid infused monster will feature on the A-side while being accompanied by a more chord driven version on the B side. Despite being played to death in the last 6 months there's no doubt that this pressing will sell out extremely quickly.

Attack Yourself!'s Big Tips For 2012

As 2011 is almost over, I thought I'd share a few artists who I think are gonna be big next year.

Finland's Lenno has already had a pretty big year. At just 16, his future is looking brighter by the minute, with an EP on Top Billin and remix credits for the likes of The Wombats and Foster The People already under his belt. Watch out for this guy in 2012, he'll be making major waves.

Disclosure are two brothers, aged 17 and 20 from Surrey, whose beautifully-produced future-garage vibes have been gaining support from tastemakers such as Annie Mac and Moda. Next year will see the lads release new tune "Tenderly" on Make Mine and support SBTRKT on his 2012 UK tour.

I've talked about Simba before on the blog, he makes jackin', funky deep house with a lo-fi twist. His "5 Minutes With Beaumont EP" has quickly become one of my favourite house releases of the year. He's also one half of the duo Chalaa, who have just signed to the new Stripped & Chewed label run by Adulture and Ghosts Of Venice.

You probably know James Welsh as one half of Ocelot, but more recently he's been branching out into the realms of deep house and moody disco with his own work. His debut solo release, the "Indoor League EP" on Siteholder Records, came out back in March, and he's set to drop his second, the outstanding "Air Valley", on the Losing Suki label in January.

Discosocks is one of the best producers I've discovered this year. His brand of "weapons-grade funk" (an energetic fusion of disco samples, live slap bass, and the occasional sprinkling of electro wobble for good measure) has gained fans in The Young Punx, Birdee and The Phantom's Revenge, among others. Oh, and did I mention he's from up norf just like me? North East massive represeeeeeent.

Last night Skream announced he was giving away the final installment in his Freeizm series with the message 'Fuck it..Im feeling the festive spirit...Im doing the FINAL Freeizm....It's all tunes made between 2004-2006....Will be uploaded in 30 mins..Merry Christmas!'

Wary of the drastic departure in style that would be apparent to his more recent fans he warned 'Only for people who are fans of Dubstep circa 2004-2006 ... This will not impress people who found dubstep in the last 3 years!', although he later clarified '...I just meant that the sonics and dynamics are alot different...I was 17/18 when i made all them tracks...Thats all......'

Indeed, all of the tracks highlight Skream's earlier style with simple, effective percussion and a much sparser, darker and atmospheric collection of sounds. Also included are some classics which often featured in early Stella Sessions and sets such as 'Hurt The Soundboy' and 'Dubbers Anonymous Pt 2'.

Radiohead's New Tracks Now Available To Listen to Online

Radiohead have uploaded two new songs to their official YouTube account. The two tracks, 'The Daily Mail' and 'Staircase', were released yesterday and come from the studio sessions for the King of Limbs album.

The band are currently preparing to start work on new material in the new year and have suggested that a UK arena tour is on the cards to accompany their existing North American dates.

Ghostpoet & The D.O.T - Trouble (Music Video)

2011's festival season marked the end of the road for The Streets as they played their last ever shows. However, only a few months after bidding Skinner's band farewell he's back with a new outfit, "The D.O.T", featuring Rob Harvey of The Music. They've got a few conceptual videos and some music on their website but details and information are scant regarding the duo, but I'm sure that will all change very soon.

The video for their first single, a collaboration with Mercury Prize nominee Ghostpoet, appeared online yesterday, and it's set to make waves. First of all, The track "Trouble" is simply brilliant. Skinner's influence in the production is evident and Ghostpoet's unique style of spoken-word rap does a great job of keeping things down to earth and understated - a great contrast to the hook provided by Rob Harvey's soaring vocals.

Whilst the track has all the hallmarks of a hit single, the real headline here has to be the music video, produced by RizLab.co.uk. It's the world's first interactive music video and it was shot live in one take in front of a studio audience who voted (in real-time) for what should happen next. The band were entirely unaware of what to expect and it's their reactions to the unusual sequence of events that makes it so entertaining. It's great to see artists getting more creative with their music videos and an obvious theme throughout this video is the gentle satirising of established music video clichés. The result is something fresh, original and innovative - something I hope to see a lot more of from these guys.

We've made no secret of our love for Jackmaster on this blog and today will be no different as it sees the release of his Resident Advisor podcast. Expect 100 minutes of dance music spanning numerous genres and decades that fit together seamlessly.

RA also have an accompanying interview so in the man's own words... "it starts a lot slower both in terms of tempo and the pace of the actual mixing and blends. It splits from that style into the more "party" kind of DJing I'm known for, pretty much exactly the middle. It wasn't really pre-conceived like that. It's just the way it turned out."

New Daft Punk Tron Remixes ft. Ariel Pink

Although Daft Punk's Tron: Legacy score came out almost a year ago it's still managing to throw up some gems despite the original bout of remixes being a bit of a mixed bag. As Pitchfork reports, Vinyl International has released a new 10″ EP called Sky Sailor that features two new Daft Punk remixes from TRS-80 including one with new vocals and lyrics provided by Ariel Pink. The track, an alternate version of ‘Solar Sailer’, is a haunting effort that captures both the psychedelic leanings of Ariel Pink and the original 80's tinged atmosphere that Tron evokes.

Jack Beats recently announced that they'd signed to Deconstruction Records and would be releasing a brand new single, "End Of Love", on December 5th. On top of that, we'd heard rumours of an album as well as a brand new live show and decided we needed to have a chat with Beni & Niall to find out what's in store.

I think we first came across Jack Beats in 2008 with the Project Bassline - Drop The Pressure remix. How long has the project been going all together, and how did it first come about?

Niall – Well we met when we both moved to London to the same kind of area and we knew each other as friends and through DMC comps and stuff. But we started making music a long time after that when we decided to finish a remix together. And from there things just clicked.

How did you come up with the name "Jack Beats"?

Niall – Well we had to basically come up with something fairly quickly because we had music we wanted to release.

Beni – We needed an alias and ‘jacking for beats’ is hip hop terminology…

Niall –…and also someone’s name so people would think that maybe it was one person, and so no-one knew who we were.

It's always interesting to find out how artists look at their own music. How would you guys describe your sound?

Beni – It's really hard to define our music. It's a lot of different things: house, electro, hip-hop, dubstep. A bit of everything...

Looking through my collection of Jack Beats tracks it's clear that you guys have done a lot more remixes than you've released original tracks. What made you decide to do that?

Niall – Well we started making tracks in that whole fidget house era and I guess the standard currency in that scene was to remix rather than put out your own original productions. We were kind of following in Switch’s footsteps, and from there, it kinda stuck.

Do you have a particular Jack Beats track or remix that's a personal favourite? Either because it always goes down so well, you're especially proud of it or it has some significant backstory/sentimental value?

Beni – I guess the one you mentioned earlier, ‘Project bassline,’ or our AC Slater remix because it felt like that’s when the doors really opened and things started to kick off. It seemed to hit a chord. You know, we still play it in our sets now and it works in the set. That’s a good testament to the track.

If you could pick anyone in the world to remix a Jack Beats track, who would you choose?

Niall – I reckon Switch as that would be a challenge . And he’s still the daddy.

Beni – …even if he took our kick drum and put something else completely on it, I’d love it!

You've got a new album coming out early in 2012, what can you tell us about it? Is it set to be a collection of tracks made for the club or can we expect some more chilled out stuff too?

Niall – It’s essentially the stuff we do normally, a few more chilled tracks, y’know something that’s a complete body of work, and a complete album. That’s the idea anyway!

We also heard the album will feature a range of collaborations, could you tell us who you've got on board?

Beni – I can’t tell you at the moment but there may be a few. You’ll have to listen out!

Your latest single "End Of Love" samples Leonard Cohen - was it a struggle to get that sample cleared?

Beni – Well the track originally started from that sample and centered around it. And the idea was originally to put it out as a white label, we didn’t think we could clear that sample at all…

Niall – …but somehow Sony managed it and I’m still surprised by that!

You've just signed to Deconstruction Records which is a pretty big deal! How did that come about?

Niall – Well they’re a great label to be working with and releasing on the same label as some of our peers such as Magnetic Man and Katy B is really exciting!

We hear that you're currently working with Bionic League (the guys responsible for Daft Punk & Deadmau5's live shows) to put together your own Jack Beats Live show. Without giving too much away, what kind of thing can we look forward to with this?

Beni – It’s still very early days but we are working towards our live show and it’s something we have loads of ideas for at the moment.

With the new live show and new album set for the start of next year, it's clear you guys have a lot on your plates right now, but is there anything else Jack Beats-related that we should all be aware of?

Beni – Well we’re hitting Australia with our Jack Loves Oz tour over the New Year. We’re playing 8 dates I think over 2 weekends so prepare yourselves for that Australia!

Oliver $ straightened this remix right out and keeps a rocksteady 4/4 groove going throughout. No bassface-inducing half-step breakdowns here, just straight up jacking house business.

On the flip side, Kutz has gone in quite the opposite direction with this knee-wobbler. A serious jump up monster, guaranteed to get fun fingers in the air.

This Monday saw the latest release from Night Slugs in the form of Kingdom's 4 track EP Dreama. As a treat Kingdom has been uploading a few previews on his Soundcloud . Opener "Let You No" has now been joined today by "Stalker Ha".

Night Slugs' own press release decsribes them as such ... The long-awaited “Let You No” continues where “Fogs” (NS006) left off: A cinematic half-time environment of impecable snap percussion and winding eski synths, with a longing performance from a disembodied diva, the track’s anonymous guest star.

“Stalker Ha” sees Kingdom return to the vogue track format he first explored on his remix of Egyptrixx’ “Everybody Bleeding” (NS002). It’s a ‘Ha track’ in that it samples Masters At Work, but its militant precision and weight are all Kingdom’s own.

Air to release new album, La Voyage Dans La Lune in Februrary

This isn't typical POW! news. However, any of the groups/artists we blog about have probably been influenced by this French electronica duo, Air renowned for their resonating synth work.

La Voyage Dans La Lune, ("A Voyage to the Moon") directed by Georges Méliès is considered to be one of the first science fiction films ever. Air originally scored the film for a screening at Cannes this May but they've decided to expand it to a full release. Check out the tracklist after the jump.

Crookers - Hummus (Botnek Remix)

Botnek are without a doubt my favourite producers of the year. Their inimitable, Dutch-infused leads and bouncy, tropical rhythms have seen them enjoy a meteoric rise through the ranks in the past year, releasing tracks on Discobelle and Southern Fried and remixing the likes of AC Slater, Kissy Sell Out, and now the mighty Crookers!

Remixing a track from one of the most hotly-anticipated records of the year is an easy thing to get wrong, but Botnek have smashed it on their remix of "Hummus", from Crookers' "Dr. Gonzo" album. There's plenty of the Canadian duo's trademark bleepy bendy bits (I believe that's the technical term for them) here, but they also mix it up with a massive acid drop in the second half.

MTV revisit "Yo! MTV Raps"

Yo! MTV Raps, the seminal hip hop music show that ran from 1988-1995 will return for one night only on December 4th.

Tyler the Creator on new album, Wolf.

Tyler, the Creator has revealed to SPIN that his next album is titled Wolf and scheduled for release next May. Goblin took heavy flack for being over-hyped and over-rated. To me, this is clearly a product of the adoring youngsters copying his every move though right? His rise was something of a weaponised virus. To those with delicate sensibilities, you'll be pleased that his new album will take new lyrical direction:

"Talking about rape and cutting bodies up, it just doesn't interest me anymore... What interests me is making weird hippie music for people to get high to. With Wolf, I'll brag a little more, talk about money and buying shit. But not like any other rapper, I'll be a smart-ass about it. Now it's just girls throwing themselves at me and shit, but I got a girl back home. People who want the first album again, I can't do that. I was 18, broke as fuck. On my third album, I have money and I'm hanging out with my idols. I can't rap about the same shit."

If being a superstar DJ, Grammy nominated producer, film director and Blackberry spokesperson wasn't enough, Diplo has decided it's time for him to go in hard on the book game.

The archive, entitled '128 Beats Per Minute' is penned as 'Diplo's Visual Guide to Music, Culture and Everything in Between'. Boiler Room - Amsterdam: Richie Hawtin Mix

The other week Boiler Room were in Amsterdam for the Amsterdam Dance Event. Naturally, they also put on a broadcast from the city. A collaboration with Minus Records, it featured musical heavyweights Richie Hawtin, Dubfire, Seth Troxler and Ambivalent. Luckily for us they decided to record Richie Hawtin's mix. As you would expect it's 70 minutes of minimal tech brilliance.

Style Wars: The Original Hip-Hop Documentary

This week Pitchfork have been playing host to several features on the seminal film Style Wars, a 1983 documentary on hip hop culture directed by Tony Silver. Awarded the Grand Prize for Documentaries at the 1983 Sundance Film Festival the film is considered an indispensable document of New York street culture of the early 1980s. Now approaching its 25th anniversary the Save Style Wars project has been created in order to raise funds to repair and refurbish the original footage using digital technology.

Filmed over two years the film focuses on the thriving graffiti and b-boy cultures and how, along with the emerging early hip-hop scene, these communities began to form an identity that not only defined New York but eventually spread across the world.

We caught up with Brooklyn-based DJ and producer Codes (Cody Murray) to talk about his sound, his musical past and what he's got in store for us. He's also sent over a bunch of free tracks and mixes, grab the downloads after the jump!

(POW!) - How long have you been DJing/producing, and how did you get into the music business?

[Codes] - I have been DJing for about the past 12 years and started producing about 5 years ago. I started to venture into the music business about 10 years ago when I started my first weekly party.

(POW!) - Have you always gone by "Codes" or have you had other DJ names in the past? (the more embarrassing the better!)

[Codes] - When I first started DJing I went by "Code-D" which is like my real name "Cody" but spelled out different. Back then I was playing mainly Jungle/DNB & Hip Hop. Then about 4 years ago I started a group called The American Dream Team or TADT. Now I'm trying to do the more me thing and go by an old nickname of mine "Codes".

(POW!) - It's always kind of hard to pigeon-hole music, but how would you sum up your sound?

[Codes] - To put it simply, I make club music, all kinds of house and some moombahton lately but I try not to limit myself. I take sounds that influence or inspire me and flip them into something that will go off in the club. Big kick drums and heavy sub bass with some kind of catchy hook.

(POW!) - From listening to your tracks and your mixes it seems to me that there's a lot of funk, disco, hip hop and scratching in there amongst the electro and house. It's refreshing to see someone taking this approach to mixing up these genres, but what is it that inspired you to do that? Do you come from a hip hop/turntablist background?

[Codes] - For me, I was inspired to make music by patching different pieces and samples together to make something cooler. I was probably first exposed to DJing via mainstream airwave likes MTV, the movie "Juice". Scratching and hip hop was something crazy to me. Then, once I started getting into raves I started buying mixtapes at parties and record shops which pushed me full swing into wanting to DJ. The mixes with dope intros and lots of cutting are the ones that really inspired how I DJ.

(POW!) - I know it may seem a bit arbitrary, but with so much exciting new technology around nowadays, I'm always interested to know what equipment different people are using in the club. What's your typical/ideal set up?

[Codes] - My usual set up looks something like a pair of 1200's, a decent mixer with curve control (909, 800, TTM57) and then just my laptop and Serato.

(POW!) - Is there a particular track of yours that is especially important to you? Maybe you're really proud of how it turned out or it's got a cool back-story or something?

[Codes] - The remix I did for Craze's "Dance Alone" is pretty important to me not only because I'm really happy with how it turned out but also because I think it was a major turning point for my production and sound. He told me he needed it asap so I cranked it out in a day which isn't a normal thing for me. It just kinda came out and has been one of my favorite remixes to date.

(POW!) - Every DJ has that one track that they draw for when they really need to kick things up a gear and make people go crazy. What record's doing it for you right now?

[Codes] - Torro Torro's remix of my Codes track "God Bless" and this new bootleg I did of Major Lazer's "Original Don". Should be giving that one out soon.

(POW!) - As a DJ, who's your biggest inspiration? Is there anyone you've seen rocking a party and just thought "wow - that's how it's done"?

[Codes] - A lot of people are taking DJing to other levels. It's a good time to see it kind of take shape. Performers like 12th Planet are really having fun out there. I'd say the whole Slow Roast team is definitely a solid group of talented producers and DJs. All of my peers are inspiring.

(POW!) - How was it that you came to get signed to Slow Roast Records?

[Codes] - The lead track off my Codes House EP "Dying" is what first got the attention of Slow Roast Records. They asked me for more stuff like that so I did an EP of records that fit that calibre and style. Then they signed me and the rest is history.

(POW!) - You've been doing quite a few collaborations recently with some heavy-hitters like Craze, Treasure Fingers and Tommie Sunshine. Do you prefer working on your own or with someone else? Also, do you have any more exciting collab projects coming up in the near future?

[Codes] - I really enjoy both. Working on my own is nice because the end product is something that completely came from my own head. Working with talented people you respect is also a great thing. You get to mix together two different production styles and sounds to come up with ideas you wouldn't necessarily come up with on your own. As far as the future, I have some pretty cool stuff I'm finishing up with Craze and I have some new tunes started with my buddy Flinch. I'm also working on a lot of new solo records.

(POW!) - We're based in the UK, are we going to be lucky enough to see you playing shows this side of the Atlantic any time soon?

[Codes] - Yes all of that is in the works. Probably not till next year but I will be out that way soon enough.

(POW!) - Are there any other cool Codes-related things coming up soon that we should be aware of?

[Codes] - My Codes House Remix EP will be out soon. This EP will have some amazing remixes from Flinch, Rob Sparx, Torro Torro, Neoteric & Wax Motif just to name a few. Thom Yorke, Jonny Greenwood & Doom - 'Retarded Fren' - Stream the Track

This collaboration was announced earlier in the year in March but we can now finally hear what Yorke, Greenwood and Doom have been up to in the studio. Released as part of Lex Records' 10th anniversary celebration the track is entitled 'Retarded Fren' and contains many of the elements you might expect from the trio. The pitter-patter of looped drums and orchestral strings reminiscent of some of Greenwood's film scores form a background to Doom's distinct flow to create a track that, although not mind-blowing, is a refreshing deviation from the norm.

Orbital - Never

Despite reuniting in 2009, Orbital haven't put out an album since 2004's The Blue Album. However, this is all about to change with the release of their yet untitled eighth album early next year. In anticipation for this the duo released a brand new track yesterday for free. Titled 'Never' the track features many of the hallmarks of classic Orbital tunes and captures a blissful feeling with vocal snippets and warm synths flickering in and out of the track. Having seen the pair at Sonar Festival in 2009 killing it live, here's hoping that the new album fulfills some of the promise seen here on 'Never.'

Shane Meadows to film the Stone Roses reunion tour

It has been reported by The Sun that Shane Meadows, of Dead Man's Shoes and This is England fame, will be filming the band during the lead up to next summer's live dates in order to produce a reunion documentary.

Meadows was present at the band's press conference last week and will apparently be announced as the official chronicler of the band's reunion in the coming weeks.

And so we see another brick balanced on the teetering pile of hype that is the Stone Roses' comeback. My only hope for this documentary is that it becomes some sort of rock version of Hearts of Darkness as Ian Brown and John Squire slowly go down the rabbit hole into a maelstrom of ego, distrust and temper tantrums all wrapped in an atmosphere of crushing expectation. A cameo from Paddy Considine wouldn't go amiss either. Maybe in-character from Dead Man's Shoes.

In related pondering, I really think Mani should be cast in The Hobbit. Just look at him.

A Skillz & Nick Thayer - Halloween Banger (Download)

Halloween is one of the busiest nights/weekends of the year in terms of partying. In recent years it even seems to have eclipsed New Year's Eve in many people's social calendars.

Bok Bok & Tom Trago - Night Voyage Tool Kit

Night Slug's co-founder Bok Bok and Tom Trago are to release a 6 track EP named Night Voyage Tool Kit. Part of Sound Pellegrino's Crossover series, the release was born when Bok Bok spent a week at Trago's Amsterdam studio recently

The EP is not the only result of the two working together. Trago, in a recent interview, also mentioned that the pair are planning a further collaboration by working on a new record label (also called Night Voyage - an amalgamation of Night Slugs and Trago’s label Voyage Direct).

The pair's forthcoming EP is released on October 31 via Sound Pellegrino.

Duck Sauce - Big Bad Wolf (Music Video)

Oh. My. God.

When I first heard Big Bad Wolf, I envisioned a kind of Teen Wolf scenario for the video... Maybe even an American Werewolf In Paris narrative.

One thing I did NOT expect to see was a dude with A-Trak's head for a penis. Yup. You heard. A-Trak's head for a penis.

Here's what A-Trak and Armand have to say about their controversial new video:

"Big Bad Wolf" "is pretty simple, and it can mean anything, really, so we wanted the video to have its own narrative," says A-Trak, one-half of the dance duo Duck Sauce, along with DJ Armand Van Helden. "Remember when dance music videos used to actually be creative? Like when you think back to Aphex Twin, Fatboy Slim and Daft Punk… I don't know why the genre's videos became so generic in recent years.

"When Keith [Schoffield] came up with this idea of 'crotchfaces,' we just thought it was hilarious," A-Trak continues. "He started coming up with all these gags and describing the characters living in this sort of parallel world, and we were sold. He wasn't sure if we'd be down to play the leads, but our take on this was, if we're going to do this, we need to go all the way. So we played the dickheads, essentially."

They do make a very valid point. I remember watching MTV Dance etc whilst growing up and always being enthralled by the music videos for Daft Punk - Da Funk, The Prodigy - Smack My Bitch Up, and later (for entirely different reasons) Holly Valance - Kiss Kiss.

Nowadays things seem to have gone down a very generic road, and I'm all for a bit of variety and innovation. My only concern is whether or not I'll ever be able to get over the image of A-Trak's head between some guy's thighs vomiting out semen...

Machines Don't Care - Incoming EP

So it seems that, as usual, Josh Harvey has been busy in the studio. I've still not finished getting all excited about his Hervé remix of Beyonce - Countdown, but he's clearly wasting no time and has a new Machines Don't Care release scheduled for 31st October.

This time around it's Cheap Thrills label-mates Detboi and Baxta that join forces with Harvey under his Machines Don't Care guise. The result is a hard-hitting 4 track EP set to make waves.

The lead track Take Me Away is like a twisted, ravey tip of the cap to Olive's 90s trip-hop anthem "You're Not Alone". The soaring synth leads get the hands in the air whilst the broken beats and growling bass line get the feet moving. Throw Meleka's vocals into the mix and you've got all the elements of a top quality banger.

Second up on the EP is Full Moon - an appropriate track for a Halloween release. Featuring waves of wolf howls, jagged synth stabs and the kind of bass that is destined to damage sound systems, this one has "monster" written all over it.

Next is Warlord, a percussive breaks offering. Overdriven strings hang eerily over the distorted, chopped and screwed breakbeats. A staccato bass line keeps this one feeling disjointed and wobbly.

The final track on the EP is Cellular - a bass-heavy romp through the jungle, surrounded by marching band snares, rave alarms, familiar vocal samples and rolling sub bass. Another one for the junglist brigade.

All in all, this EP is probably not quite what you'd expect from a Hervé release, but at the end of the day, it's not a Hervé release, this is Machines Don't Care and the ravey influences of Baxta and Detboi are evident in these tear out tracks. I expect this to appeal more to the dreadlock crew than the checked shirt brigade, but I'm always impressed to see Harvey demonstrating the breadth of his influences and abilities by putting out such a wide variety of music.

Well, featuring this track is something of a no-brainer really isn't it? When this eponymous banger first landed in my inbox a couple of weeks ago I knew it was a must-play track in my POW! set that week. Fortunately it went down an absolute storm and it's great to be able to share it with you all now.

Today it gets it's full release on Beatport, backed by two alternative mixes both by Kris and Rex; "Rex's Casio Mix" and "Rave Mix". Neither are without their charms but I've found myself playing the original mix as my weapon of choice.

It's a roller coaster ride of a track with three huge break downs that go screeching into driving and pounding drops, almost guaranteed to be met by hands in the air and cheers.

This one's going to be a POW! anthem, so get to know it.

It's out now on Mad Decent and it's an absolute banger. It's almost like two songs in one. It kicks off with a happy-go-lucky melody with chopped up vocals - imagine Dillon Francis skipping through a meadow hugging animals and giving high fives to passing pixies. Then just when you're settling down for what seems like some kind of Disney moombahton remix it switches up and kicks you in the face with some chest-rattling bass and the kind of bleeps and squeaks that make you reach straight for the lasers.

The Magician attacked at gig in Switzerland

News emerged today that highly regarded nu-disco DJ The Magician (AKA Stephen Fasano, formerly of Aeroplane) was injured at a gig at Club Bonsoir in Switzerland last night. According to a post on his Facebook, he was attacked mid-set by a person who threw a chemical at his face.

Beyoncé - Countdown

In case you didn't know, the new Beyoncé joint is awesome. I'm serious, I fucking love it. That dancehall vibe gets me every time.

I know what you're thinking: "Why is a super-hip blog like POW! chatting about a new Beyoncé track?". Well, in short, it's because the remixes are shit hot also.

First up, firm POW! favourites Jack Beats take the cheap-keyboard horns from the original and fashion them into a 4/4 UK funky skanker. It's simple, but so very, very effective.

By contrast, Hervé's reworking leaves pretty much nothing but the vocals from the original intact, opting instead for lashings of acid bass, wobble bass and... Well, loads and loads of bass. This one will have even the most straight-faced of chin-stroking hipsters gurning like madmen.

Major Lazer - Original Don

First of all, I really couldn't care less if Diplo and Switch had recorded a monkey farting into a saxophone over a dancehall beat as long as they had released it with this Don Draper artwork. It makes me feel all warm inside.

"Original Don" is the first single off the hotly anticipated follow up to the debut Major Lazer LP Guns Don't Kill People... Lazers Do. The single, originally scheduled for a June release, finally saw the light of day on Zane Lowe's Radio 1 Show last night. Featuring the talents of The Partysquad, it's a more big room affair seemingly eschewing some of the more overt dancehall influences found in other Major Lazer releases. Whatever the case, it's a banger. No doubt you're going to be hearing this played out a lot in the coming weeks and it will crank up the hype for the release of the album that is rumoured to feature Vybz Kartel, Dirty Projectors singer Amber Coffman, members of Vampire Weekend, Sean Paul, and Bruno Mars.

I won't be happy until Jon Hamm is confirmed.

Introducing: Elro

If you live in the UK, you will almost certainly be aware of Ed Sheeran's meteoric rise to super-stardom. Brighton duo Rizzle Kicks seem to be following closely in his wake, scoring a number 1 single with X Factor's golden boy Olly Murs and their lead single "Down With The Trumpets" being played on Radio 1 at least once every 10 minutes.

Whilst much of Ed Sheeran's album is made up of the kind of throwaway ballads that James Blunt still needs to be brought to justice for, there are a few slightly more "hip hop" tracks on the album that hit the right notes. Reminiscent of Example's early material, this style of funny, witty and lyrically dexterous hip hop looks set to make a resurgence and I've got a sneaking suspicion that Welsh lad Elro could be one of the scene's new leaders.

I first came across his SB.TV video a couple of weeks ago and he struck me as refreshingly different. Since then I've been going through his Youtube videos and they never fail to put a smile on my face. I think there's just something about goofy looking white guys rapping that cheers me up.

Have a listen for yourselves and make up your own minds, but don't be surprised if you start seeing a lot more of this kid.

Massive Attack and Burial Collaboration

Gargantuan trip-hop veterans Massive Attack and underwater dubstepper Burial have joined forces for a 2-track 12". The collaboration was let slip somewhat in an interview involving Daddy G of Massive Attack last year.

The vinyl release features 'Paradise Circus' (a revisited track from Heligoland) and new material 'Four Walls'.

A mere 1000 copies were released worldwide which have since sold out. On that note, listen in here -- I'm not sure I've heard a more comfortable sonic pairing:

Lock in to the Boiler Room tonight at 8pm to witness a truly spectacular array of talent do their thing.

The Boiler Room have been showcasing some of the most exciting and forward thinking electronic music for over 18 months now, while blurring the line between live event, pirate radio and AV music show. Tonight highlights this. Installment #69 is a Radiohead takeover featuring Thom Yorke, Jamie XX, Caribou, Lone & Illum Sphere. A quite formidable lineup.

The event itself is strictly guestlist only and probably harder to get into than Fort Knox but, as ever, Boiler Room are broadcasting the whole thing live for your online viewing pleasure from 8-11.30pm tonight on their site.

Just over a year after they launched their label with a bang with volume one, French house label Shiny Disco Club are back with the second installment of the "Millenium Disco" compilation series. This one features a lot of POW! favourites like Vanguard, Louis La Roche and The Phantom's Revenge, alongside fresh new faces such as Karl Rose, Mjolnir and Tempogeist.

Rustie - Glass Swords: Album Stream

The Guardian's music site is hosting an exclusive stream of Rustie's forthcoming album Glass Swords. The Glaswegian producer has been around for a few years now receiving considerable acclaim and hype for his releases on various labels including Wireblock, Numbers and Warp. Now, given an entire LP to explore his influences we get to hear Rustie in all his eclectic glory with glitch-hop, bass music, synths and numerous other elements battling to create lush soundscapes.

Dazed TV: The Party - S.C.U.M

Yesterday, Dazed and Confused's online arm, Dazed Digital, launched the first webisode of their new programme, Dazed TV: The Party. It features South East London art rock group S.C.U.M discussing touring, image, almost getting their heads kicked-in in Leeds, and the release of their debut album Again Into Eyes earlier this month on Mute .
